Fake accounts created from IP Addresses in Russia

Apparently the Communist have discovered Capitalism and now they all want to join DealershipForum.

The forum has attracted several new accounts over that past few days with odd User Names. After a quick review I determined the accounts are being created from IP Addresses that resolve back to Russia.

Their ultimate goal is to create an account so they can SPAM the forum with ads for Viagra, Cialis, etc.

To be clear, these accounts do not pose any risk to the forum or our members. All new accounts for DealershipForum are moderated and I delete all accounts that are determined to be fake.

Wow, maybe I should be approving these accounts from Russia instead of deleting them - it might increase traffic to the forum and provide valuable information to our members.

I deleted seven accounts this afternoon and see there's a new one that just popped up.

Well they created over 50 fake accounts last night - maybe they're working overtime?

On the plus side, it's easier for me to delete their accounts than it is for them to create them - I'm guessing they'll get tired of wasting their time and try to SPAM some other forum.

I'll second Steve. Chances are the only reason they are trying to spam the forum is because it has enough legitimate activity to make it a viable target. In a twisted sort of way, it might be a good problem to have.

That's a good point.

I've noticed some of the new accounts mask their IP Address so they appear to be from the U.S. In the eyes of Google and the other search engines I bet it just makes the forum look like it's drawing more traffic.

I made a change to the registration process that requires new members to answer a simple question before their account can be submitted.

It seems to have stopped the fake accounts so far, but I doubt it will last.

This is one time I'm happy to be wrong.

It's been over a week and there have not been any new accounts generated from Russia - I would have lost money on that bet.
