Default Right to Repair

Massachusetts’s legislation passed Right to Repair.
Well good luck with that.
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

We have hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in OEM special tools that we were required to buy at outrageous prices. Many of these tools are rarely used if ever.

We do regularly use the $6k to $10k laptops, although I ‘m pretty sure we could have bought the same computers for $500 each if we could have gotten the software & support.

We don’t have the Right to Repair law in our state yet.
We often loan special tools to (some) local independent repair shops w/ good relationships.

Rarely a month goes by without us seeing a major problem caused by some independent shops. We have a customer’s car in the shop now w/ a shot engine because of an after market oil filter & the OEM warranty will not cover the repair. I’ll be shocked if the independent covers it.

It will be interesting to see what ends up with the "Right to Repair" legislative efforts. I know this is an issue that independent repair shops have been pushing for years.

That said, I'm inclined to agree with your point that if the non-dealer repair centers are forced to pay the same amount for the special tools and equipment that the dealers are required to buy it may fall in the category of "be careful what you wish for..."

I also question whether consumers will be inclined to go to an independent for repairs that historically were dealer exclusive.

While I think the "Right to Repair" legislation may have some detrimental impact on dealership service sales my bet is it won't be significant.
