Default Huskies beat Utah State - 17 - 31

It was a good weekend of College Football from my perspective.

The Huskies beat Utah State and looked pretty good in the process. The Huskies are starting a true freshman at Quarterback and he showed a great deal of poise - bouncing back after making some mistakes.

The Huskies play California at home this week and Cal is coming off a tough fought win against Texas. It should be interesting.

Concerning the PAC12, it was a great weekend - the only loss was a conference battle between USC and Stanford where Stanford pulled off an upset.

USC is coached by Steve Sarkisian who coached at UW before leaving for USC. Sarkisian has burned a few bridges with the Husky faithful so it's somewhat entertaining to watch him squirm on the hot seat.

The kiosk explained that most football bets work on an 11/10 payout - meaning that if you want to win $10 you need to put $11 at risk.

In my case my $20 wager will only pay $18.20 - so I only get 91% of the money that I put at risk.

While I don't profess to be Jimmy the Greek I was surprised the margins were so thick. If a good Sports Book uses the points spread to make sure there's the same volume of betting on each side of the game then they don't care who wins or loses. Essentially the losers end up paying the winners and the Sports Book sucks up a 9% margin - sounds like a pretty good business plan to me.
I went to the kiosk this morning and it wouldn't read my ticket so I guess I'll have to resort to the old fashion method and actually talk to someone...

I'm thinking I'll roll the bet over and take Washington in their game this week with California. California is favored by 4 points but the game is being played on Washington's field.

Well that was easy.....

A super nice lady at the Sports Book explained that the ticket must have faded in my wallet and the print was too light to be picked up by the reader in the kiosk.

I collected my $38 and change in cash and headed for the exit. I was going to ask for a Security Escort to my car but I decided to risk it...

I should have placed the bet the first time I saw the line. When I first looked up the California/Washington game the line was at 4.5 favoring California. The next time I looked the line shifted to 4.0 and this morning it's down to 3.0.

Went out to Lubbock Saturday morning for the TCU / Tech game that afternoon. That was THE wildest football game I have EVER witnessed, and I've seen some good'uns! I really thought that Tech was going to wind up winning when they got to re-run the last play of the game with 0:00 on the clock after the ref ruled the ball hadn't been released for play before the snap with 0:01 on the clock that would have ended the game. If you missed it, Tech's QB scrambled all around the backfield before passing for a bout 20...the receiver then lateraled it when he was about to get hit...that player gained about 5-10yds then lateraled again for another 5 and that player lateraled a third time to the sideline and
TCU finally knocked him out of bounds around the 10yd line. All of that after TCU had just scored with 23 seconds left to retake the lead when a high pass to the end zone was tipped up into the air by the intended receiver and TCU's running back who was at the back of the end zone leaped up and caught it and barely got it down before he went out the back.

I saw that play as I was waiting for the Utah/Oregon game to start - it must have been incredible to have been there.

TCU was fortunate to escape with a win after a long fought game. As I recall TCU was ranked #3 in the nation before the game and losing to an unranked team would have been devastating.

They still dropped one spot in both polls because it was so close. TCU has had one of the top rated defenses in the country for the last 7 years, but they have been decimated this year by graduation and injuries. TCU's lineup on Saturday had only ONE returning player from last years team on the field. Defensive penalties cost them 3 Tech scores in the first half when 3rd and long situations were turned into automatic first downs because of needless holding penalties occurring on the opposite side of the field.

Smile Holy smokes - UW upsets USC at home....

OK, in fairness I really shouldn't post about the UW's amazing upset of USC until I get caught up posting about their last loss to California.

I'll add a thread about the Huskies loss to Cal and then add another about their amazing victory over USC and the beginning of the end for USC's Head Coach, Steve Sarkisian.

Default Three small bets this week....

Since I made the trip to Havasu this week I decided to stay at the Avi Casino on the Colorado River and figured I try out their self-service sports book kiosk again.

I decided to make three small bets:
  • Picked UW against USC and gained 17 points in the spread
  • Picked WSU against Oregon and gained 17 points in the spread
  • Picked Michigan over Northwestern and gave 8 points in the spread

Well, that happened a lot faster than I would have predicted....

For the news report - click here

I'm not a fan of Steve Sarkisian given the way he departed Washington when he took the job at USC but I don't derive any enjoyment over his current predicament.

It does amaze me, however, that someone with Sarkisian's money couldn't have hired someone to be with him 100% of the time to keep him sober until he could seek treatment at the end of the season.

Default USC fires Sakisian - Will Chip Kelly be their next coach?

In news that wasn't super surprising, USC's Athletic Director, Pat Haden, announced yesterday that USC had fired Steve Sarkisian and they would have their Offensive Coordinator lead the team for the rest of the season.

It has been reported that USC has a "morals clause" in their contract and that will likely make it easier for them to cut their losses since Sarkisian still had a number of years left on his contract.

It will be interesting to see who USC selects as their next coach. Chip Kelly's name has been mentioned often but there are those who suggest that Kelly's ego is too big to bail out of the NFL without having achieved success.

As always, time will tell....

As I mentioned, in fairness, I should create a post about the Huskies loss to California before I create a new post about their victory over USC.

The Huskies loss to Cal was disappointing because the Huskies were playing at Home and their young Quarterback was showing a great deal of poise under pressure. What a difference a week can make.

The Huskies didn't play well against Cal and had either four or five turnovers. It was an ugly game and Cal definitely deserved the win.

Speaking of Cal, they might be a bit tougher than I originally thought. Cal played Utah at Utah last week and gave them a run for their money. Utah ended up winning the game but it could have gone either way.

Not trying to signal that I'm the next "Jimmy the Greek" but I did manage to go 3 for 3 on my bets last week.

I'm definitely asking for a security escort to my car the next time I'm in Laughlin to collect my winnings...

Default UW Huskies beat USC as USC - HUGE win for the program

As I've mentioned in another post, Steve Sarkisian burned a few bridges when he left Seattle and headed to L.A. to take the USC job. Many of the players on the current UW roster were recruited and coached by Sarkisian and I'm sure they wanted a chance to crush USC on their home turf.

The Huskies were major 17 point underdogs when they headed to USC and they managed to beat Sarkisian and his Trojans with a final score of 17 - 12.

From my vantage point the most enjoyable part of the game was watching Sarkisian's play calling and game management as the Fourth Quarter was winding down. As a Husky fan it used to drive me insane when he would call plays that were low percentage shots or make poor game management decisions. Last Thursday the shoe was on the other foot and now the USC fans had to live with Sarkisian's decisions - and I feel it cost them the game.

USC had the most talent on the field by a wide margin. They lost the game because they were out-coached and the Huskies wanted the win more than the Trojans did.

It was a great victory for the Huskies and it's the first time in years that the Huskies will face Oregon later this week and not be the underdogs. Hopefully Coach Peterson will keep the Huskies focused and they can hand Oregon their third loss in a row...
