GM announces that Mary Barra will become CEO in January
Without a question, the biggest automotive news of the day is GM's announcement that Mary Barra will replace Dan Akerson as CEO on 01/15/14.
While the big headlines point out that it's the first time an OEM has ever been lead by a female CEO, I also think it's interesting that Barra, 51, will be one of the youngest automotive CEOs in recent memory. While I don't know much about Barra, I have read that she's spent her entire career at GM and she was most recently responsible for global product development. |

Never heard of her before the announcement yesterday but heard on the news this morning that she started with GM as in intern.
Pretty impressive |

I'm also impressed. Barra's been with GM long enough to see the good days and the bad days - hopefully she'll remember what it was that made General Motors successful and she won't repeat the mistakes of the past. |

She has a pretty interesting resume, and is said to be responsible for finally bringing GM to global, cost reduction platforms. Let's just hope she doesn't have Old GM ideology embedded in her brain. Anyone that rose through the ranks while the ship was sinking raises huge doubts in my mind. Hopefully I'm wrong!

Concerning Barra and the future of Buick and GMC, I'm betting this is your source - click here If the USA Today is your source, then in fairness to Barra it should be clarified that the priorities listed in the report are what the USA Today thinks Barra should focus her attention on. (In my opinion the list compiled by USA Today is non-sense - maybe they should stick to selling newspapers....) |

No problem - the article did make it appear that the priorities listed came from Barra.
From what I've read about Barra it appears most of her experience with GM has been in production and supply - I wonder if she's had much dealer interaction in the past? Given GM's history of "heavy handed" programs (EBE, facility demands, etc.) aimed at their dealer network it would be great if the new CEO had an appreciation for the dealers who sell GM's products and an understanding of their concerns. Time will tell..... |
