Default Pontiac, 84, Dies of Indifference

The New York Times had a great article in the paper and online about the end of the road for Pontiac.

I started in a Pontiac dealership at 16 years old. So it's a sad day for me and the loyal Pontiac drivers.

Also we are losing some GM brands (Saturn and Hummer) today along with a great dealership family members.

It's really hard to think that the name "Pontiac" had no future value to GM. It's unfortunate to see the name go so quietly. Saturn and Hummer? Well, good riddance.

I was surprised to read that GM was down to 125 Pontiacs in inventory at the end of August and only 8 were sold in September.

That said, I agree it's sad that Pontiac had to die - I'm betting it's one of those things GM had to do to make the Task Force happy. (Just like they slaughtered 2,000+ dealers in the name of shared sacrifice. )

I'm convinced Pontiac could have had a future as a niche brand within GM. There was an editorial in Automotive News speaking about what a great vehicle the Pontiac G8 sedan was and the vision Bob Lutz had for the brand. It's too bad we'll never get to see what Lutz had planned.

It would have been nice to add a G8 to the GTO's in the stable, just couldn't stomach giving the General another dime. I would have liked to see what Lutz had planned too-I remember that article, and love driving the G8.

I agree. The G8 looked like a great vehicle. Never have driven one, but sure would have liked to.
