Default Did BMW expand their Pool System for additional inventory or did they drop the idea?

A report in Automotive News indicated that BMW was testing a program in San Diego where the OEM would stock 50+ BMW 3 Series vehicles that the local dealers could draw upon for their retail sales. The idea was to increase BMW's sales performance while lowering the costs dealers typically incur with higher flooring and dealer trade expenses.

Does anyone know if BMW expanded this program or whether they dropped the idea?

The report in Automotive News inferred that BMW was providing this service to the dealers in San Diego at no expense - it almost sounds too good to be true.

While I like the idea of a pool of inventory that dealers can draw upon to support their sales I can't imagine too many OEMs would support the idea unless the dealers were willing to pay for the flooring and vehicle storage costs.

That said, maybe Chrysler pioneered this concept back in the Jim Press days when they had thousands of vehicles in Sales Bank.
