Honda to recall 344,000 Minivans for "unintended braking"
While many OEMs have faced recalls and investigations for complaints alleging unintended acceleration, Honda faces a different circumstance where they've agreed to recall 344,000 Odyssey Minivans for an unintended braking condition. Here's a link to a full report - click here
The vehicles involved all have an electronic stability control system that allows a computer to apply the brakes if the vehicle's direction is different than the direction indicated by the steering wheel. A failure of the yaw sensor may create a condition where the vehicle has heavy and unexpected braking without lighting the rear brake lights. In fairness to Honda, the company is not aware of any accidents that were the result of this condition and the vehicles involved in this recall were built in the 2007-08 model year. While this is the first instance of "sudden deceleration" that I was aware of I read that Honda had an earlier recall this year affecting 183,000 vehicles that were built in 2005 which exhibited a similar condition. |
