It's interesting that this problem has nothing to do with the 4.2 Million vehicles that Toyota's recalling due to the floormat issue - this is a different problem.

This problem involves the accelerator pedal assembly and sources indicate that a "poor design" is causing the part to wear prematurely and bind-up, not allowing the pedal to return to the idle position.

Toyota doesn't build the part, they buy it from CTS Corp. of Elkhart, Ind.

At this point the solution to the problem is unclear. If it requires a redesign of a replacement part this could prove to be a costly problem for Toyota and their dealers.

Consumer reports will still have them at the top of every list, recommended "Best Buy", and people will prolly still flock to those dealers. :-((

I think it's a smart move. It's going to have a great impact on the consumer. How many times has this sort of stoppage every happened? I can't think of any. Good move for Toyota.

Default Consolidated two threads

I consolidated the two different threads concerning the Toyota recalls into this thread.

Based on what I've read it appears that Toyota and their supplier have already engineered a replacement part that will be used to resume production. It's still unclear what Toyota's plans are for the 2 Million vehicles that have already been built.

Sounds like a nightmare to me.
I wish Toyota had a store next door to us.

Our store was told parts are 2-3 weeks out, assuming no large backlog....could be interesting to see how this plays out.

Glad I'm not in a Toyo store. They're suffering what nearly every auto manufacturing company has at one time or another. Their problem isn't difficult to understand. They began producing cars faster than they were prepared to and quality began to suffer. Why it makes such news is they have been perceived for such a long time as near infallible and we all know that's untrue.

I agree the way they're handling this is good for their image but bad for dealers especially those who rely on late model Toyo's that also must be recalled and those being grounded as well. Then there is the logistical problem of the service department being over run by customers seeking their recalls slowing the rate the dealers can repair the grounded units not to mention non Toyo dealers having their units in inventory that need the recall that will have to be dealt with. What a mess!

Thanks for the information, that's interesting.

I wonder if Toyota will supply the new parts to the assembly plants before they address the vehicles on the dealer's lots? Given Toyota's history of smart PR and good dealer relations, I'm hoping they'll solve the customer/dealer problems first and then re-start the assembly plants.

Great comments. I wonder if this recall will tie-up the dealership service departments and limit the amount of retail work they can do?

It would make for a tough month for a Toyota store if both sales and service took a hit due to the same recall.

From a P.R. standpoint it does appear that Toyota has taken a pro-active stance and placed the safety of their customers ahead of corporate and dealer profits.

That said, an article that appeared in the L.A. Times suggests Toyota's image and their actions don't always meet. The article is long, but it's an interesting read - here's the link - click here
