Default Is College Football finally going to get a Playoff?

OK, I know it's a little early to start getting excited for the upcoming College Football Season but I couldn't help myself when I read reports that the current BCS "Championship" will likely be replaced with a playoff game in 2014.

Here's a report from the USAToday that details the negotiations - click here

Historically the Rose Bowl has been the primary obstacle preventing a playoff series but the Pac-12 Commissioner, Larry Scott, appears to be willing to negotiate a solution which will satisfy the Rose Bowl and still allows for a playoff.

While it's too early to tell, the most likely option at this point is a four-team playoff that would result in one final game to determine the champion. It's not the "Sweet 16" I may have wanted but it's a good start and is probably a reasonable compromise. (I can still dream of an eight to four to two Championship.)

So true.

I read a report that estimated the extra game would be worth at least $350 million in media rights - they're still trying to figure out how that money would get divided up.

Here's a report that recaps the latest - click here
  • The 16 team or 8 team playoff option is dead
  • Proposals will still need to be approved by the Universities
  • Plan won't be implemented until the 2014 regular season - Which means two more years of the BCS.

Default Who would have thought? - SEC -vs- Big 12 Playoff

I'll admit I was thinking a little over a year ago that the Big 12 was going to implode and there would be a sudden creation of four Super Conferences which would ultimately lead to the end of the BCS "Championship."

I would have never predicted a SEC -vs- Big 12 Playoff game but if it puts us one step closer to the elimination of the BCS and the creation of a NCAA Football Playoff I'm all for it.

Here's a link to an interesting article that provides more details on the future SEC -vs- Big 12 playoff game - click here
