Default New Jersey files suit against Dealer for Craigslist Ads

Newspaper reports indicate the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs has filed suit against Ramsey Chrysler Jeep Dodge for allegedly violating the state's Consumer Fraud Act and regulations in its advertisement and sale of used motor vehicles.

Part of the complaint concerns advertisements the dealership placed on Craigslist. Here's an excerpt from the report:

The complaint alleges that in its Craigslist ads, the dealership failed to disclose:
  • its business name and address;
  • the vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle being offered for sale;
  • the actual odometer reading;
  • prior use of the vehicle;
  • prior damage to the vehicle; and
  • the required statement that "price(s) include(s) all costs to be paid by the consumer, except for licensing costs, registration fees, and taxes."

While this filing may be unique to New Jersey I wouldn't be surprised to see other states take similar action. Most states are broke and car dealers are popular targets.

If you run a dealership or an Internet Department it might be a wise investment of your time to verify your Craigslist ads follow state requirements.
