Hennessey modified C7 breaks 200 MPH on Texas Toll Road
In what appears to be a multi-agency PR stunt, Hennessey Performance took a modified 2014 Corvette C7 and broke the 200 MPH barrier on a Texas Toll Road. Here's a link to a report with more details - click here
Hennessey claims it's the first recorded event where a C7 broke the 200 MPH barrier. And while I refer to the effort as a "PR Stunt" I don't mean that in a negative way - I think the event was a brilliant way to showcase Hennessey's modifications to the C7, the design and construction of the new Toll Road and the capabilities of the Toll Road's photo-enforcement system to collect tolls. If you get a chance, check out the YouTube video in the link above. |

I also thought it was pretty cool that the Texas State Troopers have at least one Dodge Challenger SRT8 in their fleet....

I really liked the video. It looks like Hennessey shifts the Corvette into fifth gear at about 145 MPH and just uses engine RPM to reach 200+ MPH.
When I first watched the video I thought he was "red-lining" the engine but when I watched the video the second time I'm pretty sure the red needle that I can see on the IP is for the speedometer and not the tachometer. I tried to determine the top speed of a stock 2014 Corvette but apparently GM does not publish that figure. I read one magazine report that did a dyno-test of the C7 and they reported the limiter kicked in at 192 MPH. As a point of comparison, SRT indicates the top speed for a 2014 SRT Viper is 206 MPH. |

I didn't even notice the button when I watched the video the first two times. (Props for your powers of observation.... )
I had to do a little digging but based on what I've read I'm betting the button in his left hand is for nitrous. Here's an excerpt from an article about the event: It should be noted that the bright white Stingray that John Hennessey piloted down the Texas highway to 200.6 miles per hour was also equipped with a nitrous oxide package that is not included in the HPE600 C7 package so those looking to go 200 miles per hour in their new Corvette might need a little more than just that HPE600 setup but I would expect that the folks at Hennessey would be happy to sell a nitrous setup or at least point customers in the right direction.I don't know much about nitrous but I'm guessing a person could empty a tank pretty quick if they're trying to accelerate from 150 MPH to 200 MPH. Given that a stock 2014 C7 is good for a top speed of 192+ MPH I'm a little surprised Hennessey decided to use nitrous for his 200+ MPH run - maybe he needed the extra power because the course was relatively short? |
