Default Gas is down to $3.17 in the Seattle area

My old Dodge truck was running on fumes and I decided it was time to fill it up. I found the cheapest gas was at a Safeway store - the sign displayed $3.07 but they whack you an extra 10 cents if you want to pay by credit card.

On the plus side, I had some Safeway Gas Rewards built up so that lowered the price of gas down to $2.87. The only downside to the Gas Rewards program is a recent change that limits the number of gallons of gas purchased at a discount to 25 gallons or less.

Gas went from 2.95 to 3.39 this week. Of course the weather went from 6" inches of snow to 70 degrees today with 60-70 mph winds. Man, I love living in the Midwest!

Wow, that's quite a variance for just a 60 mile trip. There's no question that some gas station owners have decided to chase margin instead of volume.

I'm surprised the big oil companies haven't followed Detroit's lead and established two-tier pricing with stair-step incentives that are guaranteed to drive their station owners' margins to almost zero.....

Default Recap of gasoline prices during my Road Trip from Seattle to Phoenix

On my most recent road trip from Seattle to Phoenix I drove my TJ and towed a small 4' x 8' U-Haul trailer. Fortunately I burned far less gas than my last trip where I drove my Dodge Truck and towed my old Fury.

Here's a recap of the most recent trip:

-- $3.31 - Seattle, WA
-- $3.27 - Albany, OR (They still won't let me pump my own gas....)
-- $3.31 - Medford, OR
-- $3.39 - Corning, CA
-- $3.39 - Gustine, CA
-- $3.59 - Frazier Park, CA
-- $3.95 - Blythe, CA (Jeep's running on fumes - partial fill because AZ isn't too far away.)
-- $3.19 - Ehrenberg, AZ

As a side note, the highest price gas of the trip and the lowest price gas of the trip were purchased at stations that were within 15 miles of each other. There was a 76 cent price drop by driving 15 miles and crossing the Colorado River - escaping California's high gas prices and making it to Arizona.

In the lady 2 weeks gas went from 2.89 to 3.39/gallon. I imagine it will go down after holiday gouging.

I paid $3.56 to fill up my old Dodge in Enumclaw, WA last Saturday. I was able to save an additional 30 cents/gallon by using some Safeway Discount Points so that made the experience a little less painful.

I was going to calculate my fuel economy but discovered that my odometer is no longer working. A quick search on Google determined it's a very common problem and results when a plastic gear in the speedometer housing gets stripped.

The good news is that it's an easy fix, the bad news is that the going rate for the odometer gear is $25 - $30 and it's not even the size of a dime. (I don't care about the money so much, I just feel like someone must be making a huge profit since the material cost can't be more than a penny or two.)

Well, I ordered my replacement odometer gear and have it installed - my old Dodge has a working odometer again.

Here's a picture of the failed part:

If you look carefully you'll see there's a missing tooth on the small blue gear - that's what caused the failure.

I paid just over $25 for the replacement gear - I'm guessing the incremental profit for that part has to be at least 99.8%.

Back to the main topic of this thread, gas prices have been trending up in the Seattle area with the price for a gallon of regular going up to $3.61 at the nearby Costco.

Yes, I don't have too many nice words to say about speedometer repair places who seem to have a monopoly on their services. They would much rather have you spend $150 for an "overhaul" instead of selling you a 50 cent part, even for $25.
