Default 17 Ford Stores have closed in California this year

Although the car business is tough everywhere right now, California seems to be getting hit the hardest with dealership closures.

Listed below are the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury stores that have closed their operations in California so far in 2008:
  1. Board Ford - Whittier
  2. Claremont Ford - Claremont
  3. Don Kott Ford - Carson
  4. Keystone Ford - Norwalk
  5. Ford West - Bellflower
  6. Pasadena Ford - Pasadena
  7. Cornelius Ford - Vallejo
  8. Senator Ford - Sacramento
  9. Elk Grove Ford - Elk Grove
  10. Winter Lincoln Mercury - Sacramento
  11. Maita Ford - Auburn
  12. Moss Bros. Ford - Colton
  13. Ford of Santa Paula - Santa Paula
  14. Ford of Marin - San Rafael
  15. Ford of Fairfield - Fairfield
  16. Witt Lincoln Mercury - Escondido
  17. Atascadero Ford - Atascadero
In an effort to explain the high number of closures, industry experts indicate that California was one of the first states to have to deal with the housing foreclosure crisis. Additionally, California's high dealership rent factors and falling domestic market share have made a number of dealerships vulnerable.

Sadly, I'll add Ford of Marin to the list of fallen dealerships.

I also read a story that detailed all of the dealership closings in Ventura County and discovered that Ford of Santa Paula closed their operations. I'll add them to the list too.

I also heard Ford of Fairfield was closing as well, but I haven't been able to find any hard evidence.

Man, what is up with the Fairfield area?

When Lithia closed their Dodge store there I was surprised they just didn't do a "Project Genesis" deal with Fairfield Chrysler/Jeep. Then I saw a sales report that indicated that Fairfield C/J only sold two new cars last month.

How the heck can you only manage to sell two new cars out of a Fairfield location?

I guess when you're only selling two cars in a month you're not looking to add franchises.

Wow I cannot believe that Ford of Marin closed. I personally know the owner there. Bob Brutyn. Anyone in the Denver market would recognize the name from the Medved-Brutyn stores. He is John Medved's brother in law. Bob is a very good operator. This tells me that no one is safe from what is happening now.

I know that this is a list of Ford closures but 4 GM dealers closed in the bay area in one day alone on the 1st of the month.

Fairfield is right in the middle of Vallejo and Vacaville. There are too many dealers as it is.

I think you hit the nail on the head - even good dealers are losing their stores right now.

I'm going to start a separate list for the California GM stores once I get the lists updated for Chrysler and Ford.

I don't want to be seen as the "Grim Reaper" just waiting for stores to die so I can add them to the list, but it does seem to be a topic that draws traffic to the site.

Default Witt Lincoln/Mercury in Escondido has closed

I just read that Witt Lincoln/Mercury in Escondido has closed. They had been at the same location with the same ownership for the past 11 years.

Here's a link to the news report: http://www.northcountytimes.com/arti...e800705e68.txt

Default Make that 17 Dealerships - Atascadero Ford has closed

A Forum Member just sent me a Private Message indicating that Atascadero Ford closed earlier this year. The facility is currently being operated as a used car dealership.

I'll update the list - now there are 17 Ford Dealerships that have closed in California so for this year.
