It's been almost 4 months since we sold our Chrysler store (after having our GM franchise stolen by the government) and I actually couldn't be happier.

I've had to make some substantial lifestyle adjustments including giving up my main hobby of aviation, but the dramatically reduced level of stress and having my weekends free seems to be a worthwhile trade-off. I can't put into words the load off my back not feeling responsible for a building full of employees, having to deal with Chrysler/GM, fighting to make a $100 gross on a $50,000 vehicle, etc. I can honestly say that if someone offered me a new store with both a Chrysler and GM franchise I would turn my nose up at it. I feel like I've probably added 10 years onto my lifespan not having to deal with that crap anymore :D

For those of you still dealing with the loss of a franchise or store; keep your chin up. You never know when there might be something better around the corner.

I think more and more owners and managers at dealerships have recently took a few steps back @ their lives. How many working hours, pay, benefits, savings for retirement, so many of us thought the big bucks would keep rolling in forever.
I compare my working career to my brothers; he works for the county in a managerial position, earns about 100K, works no more than 40 hours per week, never works nights, weekends nor any holidays. ZERO stress. He does realize a lot of public jobs have been cut, but still more secure than our line of work for sure.

The quick death in 2009, with a shot to the head, was better than the "gut shot", and slow bleeding to death, others have felt.

I'd have argued with you about that back in 2009, but now that it's 2011 I'll agree with you.

Txflyer - I'm still getting caught up and just had a chance to read this thread.

I'm very happy you're in a better place and feel you've added 10 years to your life. I also agree with ghostrider's comments concerning the money that's available in automotive retail contrasted to the amount of stress and the hours worked. The car business has changed and I don't think the "glory days" will ever return.

I'm sorry to hear you've had to give up your hobby but hopefully you'll be able to dust off your pilot's license when your new career begins to generate more income. (I've always had an interest in general aviation but never pursued it because of the expense and time commitment.)

Thanks again for starting this thread - hopefully your experience and perspective will be helpful to those who are reflecting back on their situation.
