From my hometowm newspaper, the Sheriff Department's brand new Dodge Charger goes up in flames. It started in the wheel well. I wonder what could be the cause?

Based on the report it sounds like they're thinking it could be brake fluid ignited by the exhaust system. I'm no expert but I wonder if an exhaust pipe is hot enough to ignite brake fluid?

I hate seeing a Charger cop car burn to the ground. :( Overall it seems like the vehicle has been well received by most police departments.

Down here in FL, the Charger is now the offical vehicle of the Florida Highway Patrol. Fully marked, slick tops, or unmarked, the Troopers say the love them.
I think we all will be seeing more of the Chargers since the Crown Vic s have completely stopped production. The new rear drive Chevy Police Car (look like a streched out Pontiac G8) looks nice but reportly much more money than a Charger.

It will be interesting to see how the police fleet sales trend now that the Crown Victoria is out of production.

While I've heard mostly positive reports about the Dodge Charger in police use it seems like almost everyone complains of the small trunk size and the limited rear seat room once a cage is installed.

In the Phoenix area I've noticed more and more police agencies are using SUVs instead of patrol cars - mostly the Chevy Tahoe.

On a final note, I've been amazed at how well the retired Dodge Chargers are holding their resale value. I've watched a few that were sold via Ebay and it seems they're selling for almost twice what a comparable Crown Victoria would sell for.
