I was curious if anyone here has set up a Google Voice account yet?

As I understand it the service is relatively new and it's very similar to Skype. The best part is it's FREE. :)

The concept is Google provides you with a phone number and you can direct all of your current calls to that number - e.g. your work phone, home phone, cell phone, etc. You then have the ability to send those calls to whatever phone you want to answer - you can even set it up so calls to certain number go directly to voicemail based on time of day or who's calling.

They also have a feature where you can "call screen" on your cell phone - just like the old days when everyone did that with their answering machines.

Here's a link to the Google site with more information - click here (http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#) (The videos are really good if you have High Speed Internet)

I have downloaded the app for my iPhone, but haven't used it yet. It told me I needed to setup something through my gmail account, so I lost interest.

As I understand it Google want their Gmail users to have the ability to make free phone calls from their Gmail account. The concept is allow their users to call any phone number in the U.S. from their computer for free. The days when people pay for long distance calls are winding down.....

Concerning your iPhone, I read that Google and Apple battled for a long time before allowing the Google Voice App to be offered for the iPhone. I guess AT&T wasn't too excited about allowing iPhone users to make free calls via WiFi to keep their minutes down. Even worse (from AT&T's point of view), the Google Voice App allows International Calls at deeply discounted rates.
