As I've said in years past, the only thing that makes this time of the year bearable for me is the return of College Football. :) (I hate the fact the days are getting shorter and cooler weather is just around the corner.)

I enjoyed watching USC and Hawaii last night and my UW Huskies play at BYU on Saturday. I think it's the first time Husky Coach Sarkisian has been to BYU since he played there - it should be interesting.

Concerning USC, they have a new Special Teams coach and he had several different schemes when USC completed their PAT. I think he'll drive his opponents crazy as they try to defend all the different variations. And I doubt the kicker is too happy, it seems like most of the time USC decided to go for two points instead of kicking the ball.

Hey, I've heard a lot about JerryWorld, I was hoping to go there one day. :)

During the height of all the Conference changes wasn't there something involving JerryWorld? I seem to remember some scheme that would have allowed one of the Texas schools to play their home games there.

Out here in the Pac-10 we're used to having big business being involved with College sports. Many Husky fans point to Nike's Phil Knight as the only CEO in America who owns is own College Football Team.

X-Man – Good luck to your Huskies tonight! I was looking at some point spreads earlier and was surprised to see the Huskies traveling as a pick’em game against BYU. I don’t know that much about either team (except Locker) but I do recall BYU had a great season last year. Someone in Vegas likes your dogs my friend! :beerchug:

EDIT: (I had to add this snippet... a nice little "did ya know".)

PROVO, Utah (AP) -BYU is honoring some of its former great quarterbacks this weekend as the Cougars host Washington in the season opener.

One of them will be busy coaching the opponent.

Former Cougar Steve Sarkisian is entering his second season as Washington's coach. He's one of eight BYU quarterbacks selected to all-America teams that will be honored at halftime Saturday.

Sarkisian says he won't be too nostalgic during the festivities. He's the head Husky now and says his focus needs to be on his team.

Sarkisian led BYU to a 14-1 season in 1996. The only loss that year happened to be to Washington.

The Huskies are really fortunate to have Sarkisian and I hope he stays for a long time. I had a chance to attend one of their open practices last month and was really impressed.

Ironically, I was a little disappointed when Sarkisian got the job because I was hoping Jim Mora would take it. Mora went to the Seahawks and turned out to be a disaster. Now the Huskies have Sarkisian and the Seahawks have Pete Carroll - I'm in football nirvana. :headphones:

Concerning the BYU halftime recognition, it will be interesting to see how the crowd reacts to Sarkisian's mention.

Well, that didn't last long.....

Not only did the Huskies lose, they didn't play that great and the play-calling by Sarkisian was questionable at times.

About the only positive I can see is the early loss should eliminate all the banter about Locker being a Heisman candidate. That should take some pressure off of him and hopefully elevate his performance.

I still think the Huskies can have a great season but they have a lot of work to do based on yesterday's performance.

Typically I like Boise State - I think they're well coached and very entertaining to watch. That said, I hate the fact that every year there's a BCS controversy concerning their record and their strength of schedule.

I knew if Virginia Tech could beat Boise State all the nonsense about Boise State playing in a National Championship game would go away. It almost happened but Boise State manage to rally in the last two minutes and beat Virginia Tech. :(

As I recall, Boise State only plays two real teams for the entire season and they've already beat one of them. Here's my prediction that Boise State will go 13 - 0 and there will be endless conversations about whether they should play for the National Championship.

I was watching the last half of the Marshall - West Virginia game and was certain I was going to witness history in the making. Marshall was ahead 21 - 6 and momentum was on their side. Marshall had never beaten West Virginia and they were huge underdogs.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the plane crash and the Head Coach's widow spoke during the pre-game ceremonies - the first time she's been in the stadium since the tragedy. Emotions were running high.

To West Virginia's credit they played a fantastic last eight minutes of football and deserved the win. In my opinion Marshall was playing not to lose - but they did. It's amazing how often that happens....

Went to TCU-Baylor saturday...Patterson allowed Frogs to annihilate Baylor for the first half (38-3), then pulled in the reins in the second half...no passing... playing second team except for QB Dalton (Heisman candidate), until Baylor scored on a long pass, then let Dalton throw next series until they scored and re-established the 35 point margin he evidently felt they needed to maintain, and had them run out the clock, taking a knee the last 2 minutes. I agree, in order to get recognition for BCS, they feel pressure to show they can dominate...not just win.

How does a coach prepare his team to play at Boise State? You paint your practice field blue....

http://i54.tinypic.com/2zqzjh0.jpg

A news report indicated the expense to have the field painted was covered by private donations and the coach thought it would be motivational for his players.

Hell, I hope it works. I'd love to see a Pac-10 team knock off Boise State and end all the chatter about their BCS rankings.

What a difference a couple of weeks can make.

The Huskies had a bye week last week which allowed them to focus on their poor performance against Nebraska and prepare for USC. The extra time must have helped because Locker played one of the best games of his career and Sarkisian displayed his best play-calling since he became Head Coach.

In fairness, USC was the better team but the Huskies ended up with the victory. :spotman:

Oklahoma does not play Nebraska in the regular season.
Both go undefeated.
Ohio State, and Oregon go undefeated.
TCU, Boise St go undefeated.
These things could happen fairly easy (Ohio State does have some potholes in the schedule). Oregon and Ohio State would be 1-2, and play for the "Nat Cham". Do the other UNDEFEATED teams have NO shot at the "Championship" ?

I was amazed when I saw the stadium...they allowed TCU fans 1,000 tickets...the entire stadium was solid black and red except for one narrow section immediately adjacent to the end zone. I didn't know that anyone was allowed to do that...I mean schools like UT, Nebaraska, OU etc...could sell out the stadium every week if they wanted to, and not allow any fans from opposing team...that creates a huge home field advantage when you have tremendous noise being generated by only one side. I know 5 young guys that went to TCU, that were able to get tickets...they waited all night and said all the tickets were gone in first 10 minutes.

1. TCU moving to the Big East is a huge win for all involved!
2. Boise St must be sick they joined the Mountain West.
3. I hope TCU gets, and beats, Wisconsin. Just to show the Ohio State Pres, and his "Big 10", how it is.

1. Agree
2. Agree (poor kicker is still getting chit)
3. Going to need some of this action... I'll take the Big Ten!

On the bright side, my Frogs now have #3 BCS locked up, and can sit back this week and wait to see if Auburn or Oregon stubs a toe knowing that they are going to the Rose Bowl even if they don't....pretty nice position to be in!

It will be interesting to see what happens with Oregon this weekend - they're playing Oregon State as an away game. Oregon State can be tough and anything can happen when you have an in-state rivalry game.

I can't believe I stayed up & watched it. I was going on to bed w/ the DVR set till I was called an old man. My son was in from college; we watched the Oregon game & then Boise State. Both great games but the next day was a very long Saturday at work.

I also think it's awesome that TCU is dumping the Mountain West - I think it moves us one step closer to the beginning of the super-conferences and the elimination of the BCS.

Concerning Boise State, it will be interesting to see what happens. I don't think I'd ever be able to see them as a team worthy of a National Championship if they continue to have a weak schedule. I wonder what Conference would want Boise State?

I had a similar circumstance but decided to go to bed.

I finished watching the Oregon game and I tuned into the Boise State game and saw they had a 14 point lead early in the third quarter. I didn't feel like watching Boise State win another game so I decided to go to bed - I didn't even bother to record the game on Tivo.

I'll have to see if I can find a clip of the two missed Field Goals on YouTube.

Yep...not counting on either of them losing this week, but I've felt both teams are very beatable the whole season. Oregon "lost" to Cal 3 weeks ago except for the winning field goal being called back, and Cal is NOT that strong of a team. Auburn should have lost to Bama last week and they've had several close calls all year...they have the ability to score alot of points in a hurry, but their defense lets alot of points get scored against them too. South Carolina could step up in the SEC championship game and beat them like they beat Alabama earlier. Will be interesting to watch and see!

Well, I've still been slacking off but my UW Huskies are one game closer to post-season play. :beerchug:

The Huskies defeated Cal in the very last seconds last Saturday and face WSU in Pullman this Saturday for the Apple Cup. WSU has been improving and they always play tough against the Huskies. It should be interesting.

Well, the Huskies managed to defeat WSU in Pullman and they're headed to their first Bowl Game since 2002. :spotman:

They're headed to the Holiday Bowl where they'll play Nebraska. Nebraska slaughtered the Huskies earlier this year, 56 - 21, when they met in regular season play so they'll definitely be the underdogs.

I'm also looking forward to Auburn and Oregon playing for the BCS Championship.

How 'bout them dogs! :buttrock: I really thought Locker was big time hurt when he went down... amazed he came back within a few plays. Congrats on that "W"!

CL - thanks for updating the thread and noting the Huskies victory over Nebraska. :spotman:

It was an outstanding game to watch. The Huskies were 0-12 two years ago and now they beat a 14 point favorite in the Holiday Bowl. Nebraska crushed the Huskies when they played in September, it's hard to imagine they're the same two teams.

Concerning Locker, I think everyone feared a major injury after watching the helmet-to-helmet contact on slow motion. He explained to the local media that his helmet shifted and covered his eyes - I guess he feared he lost his vision.

In my opinion Locker is a fantastic role model. He comes from a blue collar family, he's humble, he works hard and he doesn't seem to worry about the Millions he lost by skipping last year's NFL draft. He played a MAJOR role in bringing respect back to the Washington Football program and he'll be a lifelong hero to the Husky Nation. :)

I watched the Rose Bowl on Tivo last night - what a great game.

I wasn't rooting for either team but I was happy to see TCU win. They played a great game and it's always fun to watch an underdog win on the big stage. (At least when they're not beating your team....)

Concerning TCU, I was surprised the school only had about 9,600 students. The Head Coach was very humble following the game - he seems like an impressive guy.

Yep...Gary Patterson is the real deal...he's that way in person, off camera, whenever, wherever, 24-7...he thinks about his players and about winning football games, and about all the students at TCU...not just the ones he's coaching. He makes himself a part of the student body there...attends functions for other sports, as well as academic functions and walks around the campus and stops and talks to the regular students, telling them how much he and the team appreciate all the support and encouragement. I thought he really demonstrated some class after the Rose Bowl victory when he was asked in every interview about making the Ohio State president eat crow over his "little sisters of the poor" comment saying that TCU couldn't compete with Big 10 schools...Patterson said "hey, we've all made comments that we wished we hadn't at some time...let's just let that go." The undergraduate population is about 7,600 and 2000 post grad. My son is a senior at TCU and his birthday is New Years day, so the Rose Bowl was a GREAT birthday bonus for him!

That's really cool. No one could have faulted him for returning a jab after that comment but he took the higher road and made a statement we can all relate to.

What a great birthday present. :)

During the game one of the announcers commented that tuition/room/food for TCU is about $41K per year and is one of the best values in the nation.

It's a great university, but when I heard him refer to $41,000 as being a bargain I almost choked,...the TV announcers obviously live in a different world and income bracket than I do, LOL. He was probably reading from notes from the publicity people making reference to TCU being named one of the top 100 private colleges in the "most bang for the buck" ranking by Newsweek a few months ago. I'm just glad my son graduates in May and is hopefully looking at a tuition paid post-grad position!

That's true. :)

By today's standards, however, that does seem pretty reasonable for a private school.

On a different note, I read a story on the Internet the other day reporting there's more student loan debt in the U.S. than credit card debt. I'm not sure I believe the report, but I have heard horror stories about young adults who are saddled with student loans and cannot find a job in their chosen profession. :(

Personally, I was pulling for Arkansas...not being as charitable or classy as Coach Patterson, I was hoping Ohio State would lose and make it a clean sweep of the Big 10 schools after their president's comments...lol

Hogs receivers should be beating themselves up today! Tressel backed off an aggressive offensive plan in the second half. If the Hogs catch a few of those dropped balls, Tressel would have been forced to keep the pedal down… and we could have really seen a great game. Buckeye’s win… which everyone said that wouldn’t happen… so I’m a happy camper!!!

I saw some of the dropped passes during the post-game show - that must drive a QB insane. :devil2:

I wonder if the dropped balls are due to the adrenaline of the game or the fact there's so much time off between the end of the regular season and the Bowl games?

I know I'm biased, but I think it's another reason why the BCS should be scrapped and replaced with a playoff system like the NCAA uses for basketball.

Hope you all saw the billboards put up in Columbus, Ohio by some anonymous TCU alumni over the weekend... They got 6 spots on lighted billboards that rotate messages in 30 second spots. The boards said "Congratulations to TCU--Rose Bowl Champions"..underneath the congratulatory message it was signed "Little Sisters of the Poor"....LOL. If not you can go to you tube and search "TCU billboards". Actually starting to feel just a little bit sorry for Ohio State prez Gordon Gee, but in the future maybe he'll leave the football comments to the Coaches.

Well, it's less than two hours until kickoff and it appears all the sports writers in the country are favoring Auburn over Oregon.

While I rarely root for the Ducks, I feel the need to support a Pac-10 team and I'm hoping for an upset. It should be an interesting game. :)

Congratulations to Auburn - they played well and deserved the win.

On a different note, I think it's interesting the BCS Executive Director indicates playoffs are unlikely - the old bowl match-ups will likely return if any changes are made to the BCS.

It's no secret that I hate the BCS system and fully support a playoff system like the NCAA uses for basketball. I also think it's insane that most bowl games are played 30+ days after the last regular season game. (End of rant...)
