What you are looking at is the 2009 Hyundai Genesis. The Korean automaker's first attempt at a rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan will debut in Detroit next week and arrive on our shores later this year with a price tag that starts below $30,000. As is Hyundai's way, it will feature power, performance and amenities that belie its little price tag.

First, the design. The Genesis sedan has clean lines and uncluttered surfaces that look detailed and, frankly, expensive. Yes, it's derivative. There's a bit of Lexus LS in the headlights, some Infiniti in the profile and rear... you get the idea and can add your own observations in the comments. It's a criticism that's been lobbed at nearly every recent Hyundai design, but it doesn't stick. The design of the Genesis won't offend and it won't excite, and the only major complaint is the grille, which looks too anonymous without a big Hyundai logo front and center.

The Genesis sedan (don't forget about the rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe that's coming next) will be available with three engines including the automaker's familiar 3.3L and 3.8L Lambda V6 engines producing 264 HP/233 lb. ft. and 290 HP/264 lb. ft., respectively. The top-shelf motor will be Hyundai's first V8 in the U.S., the 4.6L Tau V8 that produces a healthy 368 HP and 324 lb. ft. of torque. The Tau V8 also gets paired with a ZF 6-speed automatic rather than the Aisin 6-speed autos that are mated to the V6 engines. The V8 also runs on good old fashioned 87 octane unleaded gas, something not all of its competition can claim.

You pose a great question.

The car looks great, it's a relative value, but will people buy a $30K Hyundai?

Based on Volkswagen's experience with trying to take their brand high-end my guess would be that Hyundai will struggle with this segment.

There's a thread in the VW section where a dealer that was once VW's #1 dealer in the nation recently filed for bankruptcy. VW's small cars have always sold well but their effort to sell the $40 - $50K Touareg and the hyper-expensive sedan they launched a few years ago have been relative failures.

Toyota was smart - they developed the Lexus brand. Honda and Nissan followed suit. Maybe Hyundai will have to take the same path?

I have to admit that I think Hyundai did a great job with their Super Bowl ads launching the Genesis.

It remains to be seen whether there's a market for an up-scale Hyundai?

I Agree, Reaching The Highline Market Is Gonna Be A Difficult Climb For Hyundai, But If We Can Find A Way To Get The Buyers To Give It A Chance, The Rest Is Gonna Be Easy. I Attended The Ride And Drive For The Genesis Intro And Had A Chance To Compare It First Hand With It's European And Japanese Counterparts. This Vehicle Exceeds The Competition In Quality, Luxury And Performance While Still Offering An Excellent Price. In Short, The Genesis Offers Bmw Quality At A Hyundai Price.

JEEPHYUNDAIMATT - Welcome to DealershipForum.com and thanks for your comments. :)

I think your post is 100% correct - I've read some great reviews for the Genesis, the question is just whether customers will place the vehicle on their shopping list and even give it a chance.

Hyundai's come a long way in the past ten years - it will be interesting to see how they do as they try to move "up-market."

I know this is an old thread, BUT I think that given the financial state our country is in right now, a BARGAIN like the Genesis is a welcome relief- no need to spend 2, 3, or 4 times the price to get about the same level of luxury. It looks great, and by all the accounts I've heard, drives great as well. If I were in the market, I'd certainly at least give it a peek.
They didn't go the route of the VW Phaeton, which was simply excessive (although STUNNING to drive- and now, you can pick up one of them for a song- good deal!), and the US wasn't ready for an $80K+ VW. Is the US ready for a $30k Hyundai budget-lux sedan? I'd say yes. Would I buy one? Maybe- gotta see how it handles :) Mark W.

I'd have to agree Mark. I've been in one of these and they are going to be great for Hyundai as long as Hyundai can convince consumers they are for real.
