I've heard rumblings that changes were in the works but now it's been officially announced that the University of Colorado will be leaving the Big 12 to join the Pac-10. A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow. Here's a link to the news report - click here (http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/colorado-big-12-pac-10-061010)

It's also rumored that Nebraska may join the Pac-10 as well as schools from Texas and Oklahoma. It will be interesting to watch how this unfolds.

I’m hearing Nebraska to Big Ten… but either way it seems certain there’s several more moves on the way! Money no doubt is the key player here… but my thoughts revolve around what X-Man mentioned several weeks ago. The new (outsider) NCAA pres. is very open-minded to football play-offs… and these moves today, better position the teams for that future possibility. Ehhh… a long shot but still something that comes to my mind.

Here’s a pretty good article from earlier today (SI) and money is again the obvious factor but he points out a more immediate goal… TV $$$. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/michael_rosenberg/06/10/nebraska/index.html?eref=sihp

If you missed X-Mans mention of the new NCAA Pres. and his opinion of football playoffs… this is a great article.

The BCS is like a non-alcoholic beer--just no satisfaction. I know that fans mean nothing when compared to money but everyone hates the BCS. Have playoffs and a champinship game. We have March Madness why can't we have December/January Madness as well?

I'm excited for the change. Now I can see the Ducks and Beavers on a regular basis. But, at some point, they're going to have to change the name of their conference, otherwise it just won't make sense.

News here indicates Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State will stay together no matter what else. The Big 12 might bring in Air Force and BYU, and sit pat.

The Mountain West may be the winning conference. They will get the auto invite for BCS, and may get Kansas, Kansas State.

CL - Thanks for the link - I just had a chance to read the article.

I agree that this is just the first of many changes that will take place - it will be interesting to see how it all sorts out. I also agree that it's all about the TV money and football is the #1 consideration.

Well said. :)

At the beginning of every season I brace myself for the inevitable BCS controversies that I know will fill the headlines. The arguments about strength of schedule, early losses as opposed to late season losses, etc.

March Madness is awesome and College Football deserves the same playoff structure.

I agree. I think the "Pac" in Pac-10 became a bit of a stretch when they added the two Arizona schools - it will become a bigger stretch with Colorado.

I've read a number of comments from Seattle sports fans that hope all five teams you mentioned come to the Pac-10 and create a 16 team conference that would be split into two divisions. Time will tell....

I agree - Nebraska will be a great addition to the Big Ten conference.

As a side note, I never noticed the hidden 11 in the Big Ten logo until I looked up the conference on Wikipedia.

possum - Any predictions on where Texas A&M will go? SEC or Pac-10?

I read an article indicating that the Governor from Texas might be getting involved behind the scenes trying to keep all the Texas schools together - I guess he's a Texas A&M alumni.

The AP has a really good report that recaps all of the changes that have taken place so far and highlights the changes that may happen this week. Here's a link to the report - click here (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i1JqlL8WCZ_OeJqCRtA8Et2B2z2AD9GAGTSO0)

Here's an excerpt from the article I liked the best: "Of course, the mega-conference scenario would also reopen discussion of something the BCS doesn't want to hear: playoffs. With 64 teams amassed in four conferences, it would likely be an easy transition from the current format."

With four mega-conferences each supporting 16 teams there would be ZERO need for the BCS and they know it.

And for the BCS executive who claims that 80 - 90% of the BCS schools support the current system - I hope he chokes on those word.

With all the prospective movements going on, it seems like the Big 12 won't exist after it's all said and done.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if there's anything worth saving of the Big 12 by the end of the week.

I guess anything can happen, but if the Big 12 were a stock, I'd short it....

This morning, Bleedsornage.com states Texas will save the Big 12, possibly by today.

I would like to see TCU added, along with BYU, Houston, etc, and keep "12".

I noticed USA Today just picked up that story and reported it on their website.

I thought I heard over the weekend that the Texas Board of Regents doesn't meet until Tuesday so it's unlikely anything will happen before then. Time will tell....

Rivals.com had a great article about the recruiting ramifications of the potential division changes. The article suggests that for the University of Texas, money isn't the issue, maintaining their recruiting dominance in Texas is the issue. 22 of the 25 recruits that went to UT hailed from Texas. Here's a link to the article - click here (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=dw-realign061310)

The fear is that if UT drops out of the Big 12 and goes to the Pac-10 it will be easier for the Pac-10 teams to recruit athletes from Texas. The same concern exists if Texas A&M goes to the SEC.

Almost every other report I've read focuses on money and TV markets, this was the first one I read that focused on recruiting. That said, I'm still hoping for a Pac-16. :)

Sadly, my ability to predict future changes in college athletic conferences is matched by my stock picking abilities. Wrong again.

That said, I'm betting that Texas reneged on a deal that's been in the works for months and used their negotiating position to carve out a better TV deal with the Big 12. (They can now have their own network.)

Time will tell if it was the right decision.

Texas A&M has a huge offer to move to the SEC, might be interesting. They have a huge fan base in Texas.

Looks like U Texas got all the kids in line. They should re-name the Conf now that there are only 10 teams. Opinion-------go back to the future, Southwest Conference.

I read some comments from Texas A&M fans whp felt A&M missed their opportunity to step away from the shadow of Texas and go out on their own.

I was hoping A&M would go to the SEC, but that was probably out of spite.

Mostly I just want to see the BCS go away....

Texas A&M would have been a good fit in the SEC, lots of teams close by, and solid ties in the south. Natural rivals with LSU, Arkansas, Alabama.

USA Today has a report indicating there were a number of outside organizations that pushed Texas to support the Big 12, I wonder if the same is true with Texas A&M?

My favorite conspiracy theory is executives with the BCS leaned on the TV executives to make promises to Texas that would allow them to make more money with the Big 12 than they could have with the Pac-16. Perhaps it's my hatred of the BCS, but I could see how something like that could happen and why Texas changed their mind at the 11th hour.

One more "grassy knoll" theory............

Big "12" needs two more teams.
Jerry Jones, aka Cowboys owner, is a huge Arkansas backer. He also loves the Big 12. He also envisions a Big 12 Championship Game in the new "JerryWorld" stadium. He also loves the big stage.........needs yet a second big time program to launch the Big 12.....insert Notre Dame here.

Stranger things have happened.

Concerning Notre Dame, it will be interesting to see what happens. It seems they really value their independence but if you buy into the four mega-conference scenario that independence will end one day.

Concerning Arkansas, it would seem unlikely they'd want to leave the SEC for the Big 12, but who knows once you have lots of money on the table.

Well it's official, Utah is now part of the Pac-10 Conference.

After all the excitement of the possibility of a Pac-16 just adding Colorado and Utah is a bit of a letdown. :(

On a different note, I read an article this morning that the A&M fans have been blasting the AD for caving into Texas and saving the Big 12 when they could have bolted for the SEC. I guess I'm still a little bitter about the Pac-16 falling apart and I have to admit that I enjoyed reading that article.
