View Full Version : Input Requested - Tightened access to AREA 51
As I've stated in another post I absolutely HATE the level of fear and paranoia that exist on the forum as a result of the Security Advisory issued earlier this week.
To be clear, my frustration isn't directed at any of our members, it's directed at the individuals who appear to have falsified information in an effort to gain access to the forum.
In an effort to restore the feeling of security that was associated with AREA 51 I've been thinking about restricting access to approved members only. Essentially, AREA 51 would disappear again and members would have to be approved before they were allowed access.
I'm looking for input regarding this idea or perhaps a better idea that would accomplish the same goal. I would also need help in approving members who should be allowed access. My thoughts are something to the effect of "the only way to gain access to AREA 51 is to know someone who already has access who will vouch for you."
I'm open to any and all ideas and would welcome some feedback. :)

Great idea...maybe provide proof of who you are and what you do within the industry?
I could PM you my SID...I'm sure I can trust you.
Great idea, make us all feel more at ease I'm sure.
I'll send my SID but I'm having issues with it for almost the past year. It doesn't work like it used to.
While I like the thought of verifying our members are who they say they are, I don't want to know anyone's S-ID number.
Perhaps we require a work related e-mail address and phone number before allowing access to AREA 51?

How about maybe having to call them at their dealership? Is 51 only for dealers/employees and such? (Newbie around here sorry) That's how they verify you're ordering a pizza and really the guy you say you're calling from. or something like that, I don't mean to sound dopey.

How is it possible to have 387 posts and still be a Newbie? :newbie:
In answer to your question, our eligibility rules indicate the whole site is restricted to dealer principals and their employees only.
Concerning your phone call suggestion, I think that's the direction we're heading. If it works for Dominos it should work for DealershipForum too. :)

I can't remember, but is it a requirement to enter a Dealer Number to join? If not, maybe it should be.
I like the call idea, too.
Heck, I think it would be good to have a Forum reunion, meet & greet somewhere!

I would LOVE to do that. :)
It would be so cool to put some names and faces together. (For those of us who have not appeared before Congress live on C-SPAN....)

That'll be the next place I get dragged into by Chrysler if I talk to the press again. LOL
And that would be a blast to sit and have a few adult bevies with you guys. I bet we could share some interesting stories and probably laugh once or twice as well.
X...I'm a guy...I never read the directions for the site, I just filled out the blocks and started ranting and raving immediately. Never looked back. :machinegun::happydevil:

Hey, if anyone from Chrysler gives you a hard time just tell them you'll post something nice about them on the forum. That will end their career forever. :)
Vegas! :beerchug:
Vegas would be awesome. We could have a party at Lake Mead in the daytime and then continue the fun to the Las Vegas casinos at night. :)

X-Man – I’m game with what ever you come up with! Seeing the steps you & this forum has provided in keeping members identities private are very reassuring. I think we have a great core of folks here and I’d really like to see more new members and/or lurkers posting as this would really add to the content already here.
Based on the input in this thread, this is what I'm thinking so far:
At some point in the near future I have my Website Developer flip a switch and AREA 51 and all the threads/posts in that section become invisible.
To be able to access that portion of the forum a member would be required to do three things:
Provide their real name
Respond to an e-mail sent from XDCX to their dealership e-mail address
Be referred or "sponsored" by an existing member who has access to AREA 51
In the event a new member wanted access but didn't know anyone who would sponsor them, I'm thinking a phone call to their dealership would be a suitable substitute.
As before, I'm looking for input if anyone can think of a better solution.

I'm certainly game on those thoughts!
I was going to suggest a new member could also gain access to 51 by submitting their best closing technique... factory snoops wouldn't have a chance on that one! :D
The Factory Snoop:
My best closing technique is when I can offer a $2000 cash payment into the buyers personal account for each vehicle he/she buy's... provided they take at least 25 additional units and fulfill their allocation... and that 5 of them are five passenger Commanders... and that the buyer don't dare tell another dealer about what a great deal you just made.
:cwm:
I'm certainly game on those thoughts!
I'm waiting to hear back from my Website Developer but it looks like this is a pretty simple solution that would address the primary concern and restore a sense of security with AREA 51.

I like the idea of logging in, requesting access to Area 51 with some type of unique
verification process specific to the dealer, verification of the e-mail access point, and then transmitting back a unique 1 time, single use password. This way the login and password can't be passed along once it is used.

That's a good idea but I don't have the resources to pull it off at this point. It would also create complications for our members who access the site from several different computers.
I watch IP Addresses carefully and feel comfortable that the members who have access to AREA 51 meet our guidelines.
That said, I share your concerns that AREA 51 remain secure and I'm open to any ideas that would enhance or improve upon our current efforts.
